No Curriculum

At Lemoine Interventions, we believe that in any form of addiction treatment a key to success is transitioning and integrating a patient from treatment back into the everyday world. It may be necessary to attend process-oriented groups, not lectures, dealing with real issues such as underlying causes and conditions, trauma, gender and sexual issues, self-esteem and the like. There is no curriculum or time table because addiction and alcoholism don’t work like that and neither can treatment and recovery.

IOP — August 13, 2016

IOP

IOP is an outpatient treatment level of care that typically is appropriate for several types of patient populations: patients in aftercare following a 28 or 30 day inpatient or residential treatment stay; patients in need of intense treatment but that have life barriers such as still working full time or taking care of children that would prevent an inpatient or residential treatment stay; or a patient that has been working on issues with an individual therapist or psychiatrist that may need a slight step up in intensity of treatment because individual sessions just aren’t working.

Addiction — August 6, 2016

Addiction

Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.

Hole In The Soul — August 2, 2016

Hole In The Soul

People in the rooms of 12 Step fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous will recognize underlying causes and conditions with little problem. 12 Step fellowships define addiction or alcoholism as a physical allergy, mental obsession and spiritual malady. The spiritual malady is often described as a “hole in the soul”, a disconnection between the addict/alcoholic and the world around them or just feelings of difference and separation from others and in not ever feeling comfortable or fitting in quite right.  Much of this stems from a self-centered perception that addicts and alcoholics have of themselves, as only seeing things as they relate to themselves and their circumstances. Another common trait is feeling “less than” and constant negative self-talk resulting in feelings of “I’m not good enough”, “I’m a piece of shit” and/or “I don’t deserve happiness”. Underlying fear, doubt, insecurity and self-esteem issues are common amongst most if not all of people that suffer from substance use disorders.

A Complex Illness —

A Complex Illness

Addiction is a complex illness with many characteristics and underlying causes and conditions. However, there ARE always underlying causes and conditions. It is why a person cannot just treat the physical aspect of addition and hope to be okay. It is typically why just getting a physical detox is never enough to treat an addiction. It is often the reason for relapse, because if the addict or alcoholic does not identify and treat those underlying issues they will continue to go back to abuse the substances that they had in the past. Why? Because the discomfort of sobriety and staying clean will drive the person back to the ease, comfort, numbness and other feelings that allow them to cope with the underlying issues. We do not treat bronchitis by suppressing just the cough but instead by treating the root cause of the infection. In the same manner, addiction is actually a symptom of greater underlying issues and we cannot just treat the symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse but rather we need to treat the underlying causes and conditions if there is to be any hope of sustainable recovery.

Spiritual Malady — July 15, 2016

Spiritual Malady

The spiritual malady is often described as a “hole in the soul”, a disconnection between the addict/alcoholic and the world around them or just feelings of difference and separation from others and in not ever feeling comfortable or fitting in quite right. The literature describes this as feelings of being “restless, irritable and discontent” while not using. Much of this stems from a self-centered perception that addicts and alcoholics have of themselves, as only seeing things as they relate to themselves and their circumstances.
